Part 1: Legacy of Mega Events – Women and Girls in Sport

The impact of mega sporting events is vast and the desire by nations to host them is not only rooted in economic development but also in the legacy of building thriving communities. Australia is set to host more than 16 mega sporting events from 2022–2032, each having a significant potential impact on building an inclusive community by ensuring gender equity is prioritised in planning. This abstract focusses on the positive legacy mega-events can leave for women and girls in sport.

Media coverage for women’s sport is less than 10% outside of major sporting events (Toffoletti, 2021). To narrow the current gender gap in sport participation, it is essential to broadcast on prime-time channels to spread awareness.  1 in 5 people across the world watched the 2022 Women’s Euro final between England and Germany confirming an appetite for women’s sport. Ideally, media platforms should showcase diversity and the reality of an athlete’s experience. Understanding that women and girls may demand a different kind of visibility and educating them on, on and off the field opportunities is vital. While AusPlay data highlights high participation in grassroots sport, other data shows women are not transitioning into high performance, executive and governance roles (Commission, n.d.). Gender Equity education of sport volunteers and decision makers; and having inclusive policies and practices is key to removing barriers. Consideration also needs to be given to creating gender–inclusive plans to design, build and operate infrastructure post mega-events. This would lead to creating sustainable, inclusive and safe facilities. To conclude, planning of mega-events needs to be inclusive and take into consideration real life challenges faced in the current sporting landscape to leave a positive legacy of equity and inclusion for women and girls.
